A city on water

Last time I posted about getting to be on an aircraft carrier, I was asked about the size of it. I had a bunch of close ups that didn’t really give the full picture of the enormity that is an aircraft carrier and was sad to realize I missed out on photographing the ship as I was walking up to it or even when I was getting off of it; never thinking once about it.

Thankfully, when I was in Hawaii in February of 2012, I got to watch a carrier come into port. To me, it was pretty neat. I enjoy witnessing these sorts of things, and that day I was smart enough to bring my camera. To put into perspective for some who might not know, this is a ship that houses over 5,000 people. It’s basically a city on water.

As I mentioned last time, it was very easy to get lost through all the hallways and corridors. They all looked the same. If I didn’t have G-man leading the way every time, I don’t know how I would have survived.
em95                                               (what I would have given to have that guy not pop into my shot)

It was so humid on the deck, we would walk through the hallways just to cool down in the frigid temperatures. My camera would fog up every time we walked outside, it didn’t like the climate change. While inside, they had a live band in the hangar bay. What I didn’t understand at the time, and still don’t to be quite frank, is a Japanese heavy metal band was hired for the event.

A Japanese heavy metal band…for a family friendly event. They screamed, they snarled, they screeched out their words at the loudest decibel possible in this hangar. “singing” about anything they thought was music we liked. Swearing, mumbling over the words (because they forgot them), or jumping up and down slamming their heads; they thought it was our kind of music. And it was sad. No one clapped. No one cheered. Everyone endured it hoping against hope the song they were playing was their last song.

What ended up being their last song was the worst of all. They decided to mix things up and slow it down by singing Love Me Tender by Elvis. A song the singer didn’t know. He held his crumpled piece of paper in front of him as he tried to sing the song. They started the song over three times as the lead struggled to remember the words, and eventually his guitarist came forward to sing the words to help the lead along.

Friends, it was bad.

We were excited when they were done as our ears recovered and five young guys took over with drums. All teenagers, one as young as 13 and nothing short of phenomenal. People filled in around us to watch their amazing performance and received loud applause throughout.

It was coming time for the airshow, and it became a battle of decisions. Ride the elevator up to the flight deck. The elevator that takes all the planes up. The elevator that would be the coolest thing ever to ride. Or leave early to get our spots for the airshow. It was a tough decision, but we chose to leave early to grab a good spot.

{I still wish I had ridden it}

But it was the smart choice to nab the perfect spot because as time wore on, our little view from above the vulture’s nest, was getting more and more cramped. As the minutes ticked down, I began reverting back to my basketball days with boxing out people who were wanting to crowd me and block my ability to take pictures. I may be skinny and take little room, but my arms are long and block a good foot on either side.

After they walked the deck three times and cleared all the equipment, the show began.

It was good, real good. Seeing a jet trap on the flight deck or do touch and goes was a pretty amazing thing to witness. Once I get my act together and compile the videos of it all, I’ll share it. I’ve seen it on tv, but to witness it, and to know I was standing next to someone who used to do that (G-man), made it all the more special for me to see.

I got a glimpse into his life. His work. His world and it was truly an honor to be there among all the men and women who serve our country. He kind of blows it off like it’s no big deal, but it really is. Not everyone cares to serve, so those who volunteer their lives for us, no matter how big or small, deserve my gratitude.

Airplane etiquette

On my last flight a little over a week ago, some things transpired that led me to think of the do’s and don’t while on an airplane. The list could certainly seem endless but I’ll only point out what I’ve witnessed.

IMG_1240
* Video games are great for kids, but having the sound on, and on LOUD for the surrounding 6 rows to hear is not the kindest.

* Having to get up to go use the lavatory? Consider when you hoist yourself up using the back of the person’s chair in front of you, that you’re pulling them back and its quite inconsiderate. This happens mainly to the aisle seat person.

* Telling the 6’5” middle seat passenger that you’ve never met that he’s a ‘rather tall son of a b****’ is probably not the politest thing you could say.

* Passing gas bombs that make a compressed air cabin’s eye’s water may be fun to you, but it’s not fun for anyone else. Just do your business in the lavatory using courtesy flushes along the way and I promise no one will mind how long you take in there.

* Telling me a passenger that they have ‘a stick up their a**’, will generally lead to a fist fight while high in the air unless a male flight attendant swoops in to quell the situation, saving you. So, its best just to remain in your correct seat without troubling any other passengers around you.

* Seeing a passenger secretly remain on a phone conversation as the plane is taking off, proves keeping your phone on is not a danger.

* Flying in a 12 passenger commuter plane and having the pilots never mention once to turn your phones off, proves leaving your phone on is not a danger.

* Having the complete stranger next to you feel its his business to demand you turn off your cell phone twice because the big jet that hadn’t even pushed away from the terminal, made their first announcement, is not appreciated. Nor is it when he leans over to his wife to whisper {loudly} that ‘she has attitude’.. so leave it to the flight attendants to tell passengers to turn their phones off.

* Catching frail old men in your lap when they lose their balance walking down the aisle is awkward but necessary.

* Leaning your crotch against the aisle seat person’s shoulder and face while you put your bag in the overhead bin is NOT okay. not not not!

* Alternate the arm rest with the person sitting next to you. Its only the polite thing to do.

* Getting so drunk before the flight and risking the entire plane to miss its small window to take off in the storm because you’re so drunk you’re arguing with the flight attendants is not the way to make friends.

* Giving up your seat so a Dad can sit with his wife and kids will win you favor with the flight attendants.

* Telling the flight attendant that you’re allergic to the dog that was brought on the plane to sit next to you will result in them moving them and the dog.

* Paying $40 to upgrade your seat only to have the 2 people sitting next to you get the upgrade for free is enough to make you want to bend over and get kicked, so see if you can’t get it for free like them next time.

* Some airlines on 5 1/2 hour flights don’t even offer free water, so make sure you load up on bottled water and food before boarding.

* If you’re wearing flats or flip flops, always bring a pair of socks to slip on for those cold flights. They’ll prove to be a lifesaver.

What are some do’s and don’t that I’ve missed that you’ve experienced? I’m sure you travelers have some doozies.

Have you ever...picture style

I thought I'd do a picture edition of Have you ever. It should be fun...for me any way. I don't know how much you'll enjoy it...or if you even enjoy my little Wednesday 'have you evers'.

Do ya'll even like reading my insanely weird and random facts? You can be honest...I'm a big girl...who has a tendency to cry when sad...but don't let that stop you. I'm tough...Ford tough. (Ok, I don't even own a Ford...but G-man does!)

OKAY, with THAT!

Have you ever had the chance to sit in one of these bad boys?!
- Yes

I had bangs once...makes me look like I'm 19 (I was 26)
I love that you can see G-man in my glasses. <hi, honey!>

yes...that's my purse on the wing. That's how I 'fly'

Have you ever gone up in one of these?
- Yes

The sun was rising right in my eyes. Very bright and very early.

Beautiful Lake Tahoe

Have you ever flown like a bird?
- Yes

Please make sure my harness is tight!

This is my, I'm extremely nervous but will pretend I'm not, smile.

Weeeeeeee

And if you aren't incredibly bored yet...let me officially get you there with this video.
The beginning is the fun part of it....after that, even I'm bored. I don't expect you to watch it all...unless you like the song of course.

Have you ever willingly ran off a mountain before?!
- Yes, by the way, all those people in the background pulled over to watch while we were setting up. It just made me more nervous.

Quick history of it all. G-man took me on base to show me around...did I mention he used to fly F-18's?? Oh yeah, I just did a few days ago.

G-man took me away to Lake Tahoe once he found out I'd never been and always wanted to go and surprised me with a hot air balloon ride over the lake because he knew I have always wanted to do it...and then later that day, scheduled me to go hang gliding, because why?....he knew I always wanted to do it....

He's extremely good to me and extremely good at spoiling me.

*Random Tip: Don't step on the seat. There's a bomb under it.

Update before we part ways:
-I seriously need an intervention from my cookies. Someone needs to come in and extract them from my mouth...or better yet, my thighs as they are traveling fast there.
-The spider that played 1/2 dead yesterday and was ultimately set free, I believe was the one that greeted me on my entry wall this morning looking rather spry...well, he be dead now.

I'm thankful 8

With the roller coaster of emotions week over and done with, I'm tickled to look back and see ALL that I'm thankful for.

I do want to say how sad it is that 2 F/A-18 pilots died last week during a training exercise by the base. My heart goes out to their families.
-

I'm thankful for all of you sweet sweet readers. I'm still amazed you want to read what I have to say, let alone leave me such kind and encouraging comments. They were all making me cry when I was reading them last Thursday...in the good way. I was very weepy last week, haha.

I'm thankful for my bible study women who all made delicious food for our last night together.

I'm thankful for the 2 ladies in particular that were with me that night when I needed a moment away. Your company was appreciated.

I'm thankful for God reminding me that He is here.

I'm thankful for my love who lifts me up even when so far away.

I'm thankful for a fun and successful Friday night with awesome ladies, reassuring me that God's taking care of me.

I'm thankful for absolutely divine peanut butter cookies. I've probably eaten over 30 in 2 1/2 days and have over 20 more to go. They are that good.

I'm thankful for knowing when and when not to brag over my baking skills. (I'm humble, promise.)

Psalm 104:33
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

All about the mushiness!

It's my sweet love's birthday today.

Happy Birthday G-man!!

So of course this will be all things him today. It is his day after all.

Of the 4 birthdays he's had with me around I've only been able to spend 1 with him. Crazy right?

1st year, he was in Japan for work.
2nd year, he was in Florida for work.
3rd year, he was in Virginia for work..but I was there with him.
4th year, he's in X country for work.

There's a pattern here...but that's the military for you.

I love him more than anything and wish I could spend it with him but alas I cannot. I'm missing him like crazy especially when we don't get to talk every day or the normal 7 times a day plus all the texting. To say I'm going through G-man withdrawals is an understatement.

In honor of him I'll post probably the one and only picture of him...and even then...
I know he isn't keen on his picture being posted which is why I've never put one up. He likes his privacy.
psst...that's him.
Did I ever tell you he used to fly these? Ummm yeah. That's my man. About 6 months before we met he transitioned into another field but I still swell with pride knowing he's so intelligent to fly.

He has his privates pilot's license too and has taken me flying before. I got nauseous, haha.

Maybe one day I'll tell the story of how we met. But for now, I will tell you that he is a gentleman through and through.

On our first...well, I guess second, but our first official date...guess that's a story too, but any way. We went to San Francisco to see the Blue Angels for our date and had just finished touring Alcatraz. As we're walking down the long pathway, he asked if he could hold my hand.

How could I say no?! I've wanted to hold his hand ever since. (cheesy? yes, but very true)

These are actually from our date. The tour guide took us 'behind the scenes' where no tour group goes...this is where Nicholas Cage jammed the needle in his heart in the movie "The Rock". Remember that?

He's kind, loving, gentle, funny, honest, thoughtful, caring, and everything else that I've dreamed of having. And just tall enough too...a major criteria to be truthful.

Being 5'11" I required him to be taller, and taller he is...by 1 inch. Juuuust right.

Oh, I wish I were there...or rather him here. It's a better place here then there, for sure!

I sent this to him while on his deployment and it still is true to this day...more than even then.
Possible? yes!

Come back safely my love. I miss you beyond words and long for your company.

Have a happy birthday!!

Love,
E-dawg
