Whoa Nelly, I’m frustrated. Not to mention disappointed. I’ve been putting off editing pictures from the mom/baby photo shoot I did…and let me honest here. It was my friend, who IS a photographer, who really wanted baby and me pictures and I jumped at the chance to do it for her.
We agreed she’d get all the pictures and she’d work her magic and edit them herself, but I figured I’d play with them as well and see what I could create. 2 weeks later, I’m still sitting in front of the images, all while watching tutorial after tutorial in aggravation, because I don’t have a blessed clue how the heck they’re ‘editing’ their pictures to make them amazing. No matter how much I pause it, to do that step.
ggrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I’m so disappointed in my lack of abilities to just turn a couple photos into that little something more.
All I keep telling myself is, ‘you need to stick with still life because you suck taking pictures of people.’ {and people, please don’t pity comment on this}
So any way, with all that said, today my friend (who also is an aspiring photographer) and I agreed to go out together, as I mentioned yesterday, and take pictures of each other to learn some more things.
We’ll see how it goes, cause I am looking forward to it. I know we’ll have a good time. I just have to learn to expect 90% of them sucking.
I’ll just show a few from my friend’s shoot, I did. Very basic, simple editing here.
Those are her brother’s names.
Now, these are her pictures that she edited. So we’re clear, I did not edit these two below.
Ah, my friend is beautiful and so is her sweet little girl.
I have to be honest. Being a “photographer” isn’t easy, that’s for darn sure. Let’s hope today fairs better. I watched a tutorial given by a 10 year old last night, and if that didn’t make me feel like a complete moron, I don’t know what will!

I'm sure you will get the hang of it! You're doing great so far :)
Oh! Oh! Send me the link to the 10 year old, phenom. Who doesn't love to feel like a moron? ;)
Photoshop has a huge learning curve. Have you downloaded any free actions? Check out http://www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/ if you haven't already. 75% of the time I start with an action (that I've gotten for free) and adjust layers to suit my tastes from there. You'll get the hang of it!
my dad always tells me the story of looking through their wedding photos for the first time. when looking at 500+ photos, he didn't feel impressed. Then my mom picked out 50 great ones and stuck them in an album and he said he felt like he had the best photographer ever!
photoshop can be a pain I know. You'll get better at it. =D
Beautiful pictures and what a cute baby girl! You did a good job, Emily! Practice those skills and you'll get better in no time! :)
Practice pictures tomorrow sounds sooo fun. I am useless with a camera, so I cant wait to learn vicariously through you. ha. That baby is a gem, sooo cute.
Absolutely beautiful pictures!! LOVEEE!!!
Amen to photography being hard! It is NOT as easy as it looks, especially the editing. I'm totally there too! I love the last one of these. Beautiful.
you silly thing... they look amazing! i could not tell the difference between hers and your edits. here's the scoop: go download all the pioneer woman's actions for free. then you don't really have to know what you're doing. although it looks like you really do know. no matter what you say or think. : )
Hey Love - so sorry I didn't get a chance to comment until now! Work, house stuff, dinner...and I'm finally able to sit down at 8:49pm and visit you!
Quick question: where are you disappointed? In your photography skills or editing skills? I don't think there is anything wrong with these photos. In my opinoin, anyone can take a picture. It takes someone special to be able to capture moments that evoke emotion. Your friend looks so relaxed and in love with that sweet babe and your photos are so...calming (? I don't know if it's because the bebe is sleeping in most of them). For your first shoot, I think you did a beautiful job!
Now EDITING photos is another story. I haven't the faintest idea how to edit portraiture and the idea of learning Photoshop or Lightroom is daunting. I would love to learn more about this too, as I think editing has a lot to do with giving photos that extra "something" that so many of us aspiring photographers are searching for!
I'm anxious to hear how today's practice shoot went...and I wanna see those photos!
xoxo
beautiful pictures!!! photography is a whole new world i didnt expect when i was getting into it. its so much more than just taking a picture, but i love it :)
